Now that you know how to make your smudge spray, let’s talk a bit more about the best ingredients to use.
Best Ingredients for Crystal Cleansing Smudge Spray
I prefer to use brown glass. Light can enter through clear glass and damage the essential oil molecules. And because I don’t want any chemicals from plastic leaching into my smudge spray, I always opt for glass.
Cleansing and Purifying Essential Oils
When choosing your essential oils, make sure you select high-quality, sustainably harvested oils.
Sage and Palo Santo are common herbs used for smudging but are also on the endangered plant list. If you choose to buy these oils, seek out a mindful supplier that supports sustainable harvesting methods.
There are also many other cleansing herbs and resins you can try in the form of essential oils.

Pure or Distilled Water
You can use any purified or distilled water for this smudge spray. However, if you happen to live next to a natural spring with clean water, using water directly from the Earth can add a powerful charging and grounding element to the spray.
Another way you can charge the water with energy is to create moon-charged water. To charge your water, leave it somewhere it can bask in the moonlight. The full moon is the most energetically powerful time to this, but you can do it any time of the month.
Finally, I want to mention that I recommend against using tap water for creating your smudging spray. Tap water can contain chemicals and heavy metals that add heaviness rather than clearing the energy.
Witch hazel is usually present in essential oil spray recipes to help the water and oil bind together and create a longer-lasting scent.
But, witch hazel has many medicinal and spiritual uses as well. Its branches are valued for their protective energy, while its twigs, petals, and seeds can assist in heightening your intuition and spiritual energy.
Selecting Crystals for Your Smudge Spray
Adding a crystal or two can boost the cleansing and energizing power of your smudge spray. These are a few of my favorites, and their
Crystals for Cleansing
|Clear Quartz||Powerful, high vibration, brings pure light energy and healing.|
|Rose Quartz||Manifests love, compassion, and deep inner healing.|
|Smoky Quartz||Brings protection, grounding and, purification.|
|Herkimer Diamond||Promotes clarity and amplifies energy and intention|
|Tiger’s Eye*||Offers grounding, protection, and positivity.|
*Make sure you’re only using polished tiger’s eye as rough tiger’s eye will degrade if exposed to water.
It’s always a good idea to double-check that your crystals are water-safe before spraying them or putting them in water.
Disclaimer: While I do believe crystals are powerful tools that can help you on your journey, I don’t believe that they alone can transform your life. They are a tool and must be combined with inner work and inspired action to help create change. At the end of the day your ability to transform your thinking, habits, and mindset are your most essential tools.
How to Use Your Smudge Spray for Crystal Cleansing
Now that your spray is finished, feel free to use it for clearing your crystal’s energy.
Just make sure you only use it for crystals that are water-safe! Some crystals like selenite, kyanite, and malachite will disintegrate if exposed to water, so make sure you always do your research. Once you’re sure the crystal is water-safe you can follow these steps to clear its energy.
-Offer your crystal gratitude for its service.
-Hold the intention to clear its energy in your heart and mind.
-Give it a couple of sprays and allow it to dry.
If it still feels energetically dull, you may want to charge it. You can do this many ways, but I like to let my crystals bathe in sun or moonlight, find a safe place where they can rest in nature to absorb Earth’s energy, or sing Sanskrit mantras with them.
You can also use your spray as a way to practice smokeless smudging. Try using it to clear the energy of a space by spraying it around the room. You can also use it as a body spray to cleanse your energetic field.
Having a smudge spray is a simple way to cleanse your crystal’s energy, (or your room, office, or aura) whenever you want.
Enjoy creating a DIY crystal smudge spray aligned with your intentions. I hope it brings you clarity, protection, and cleansing.
